GEMSTONES CARE TIPS

Although gemstones are some of the most durable of the world’s natural materials, they still need some care to maintain their natural beauty, and colour and shape.
While some stones are harder in substance than others, as a general rule it is best to keep jewellery away from dirty water, oils, chemicals, cosmetics and cleaning agents. Particular substances to protect your gems from include household chemicals – even those as mild as washing up liquid – cosmetic products such as sunscreen and hairspray, as well as hand lotions and face creams. To clean, wipe softer gems gently with a soft, damp cloth or sponge, and dry using a lint-free cloth.

For harder substance stones, wash them very gently with a weak solution of mild detergent, rinse with clean lukewarm water, and dry them with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Particular care should be taken when wearing emerald jewellery. A very widespread practice is to treat emeralds with some form of fine oil in order to disguise the very frequent appearance of flaws. For this reason, emeralds should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaning device, as such treatment will usually empty any flaws which reach the surface of the stone of any oil content, with a disastrous effect on appearance.

STERLING SILVER CARE TIPS
